Frequently asked questions

How do I submit a CleanUp?

To use the Litter CleanUp app, simply click the big green "Start CleanUp" button on the app and take a picture of each piece of litter you collect. You can pick up as much litter as your heart desires! When you're done cleaning up and properly disposed of all the trash, click "Submit". A pop-up will allow you to add an optional caption to your Trash Talk post, otherwise you can click "Done". And voila! You helped clean the planet! Please note that if you clean up when it's dark, your submission may not be approved. Feel free to reach out to info@cleanplanetproject.org if this happens!

Can I submit a cleanup without taking individual pictures of litter?

There is an option at the bottom of the CleanUp page: "Already Cleaned Up? Click Here". Use this to upload a picture of your cleanup from your phone's camera, add your estimated litter count, and submit! You will still be able to share your cleanup to the Trash Talk. This batch submission option comes in handy if you go on a larger cleanup and don't want to take individual pictures in the app, or you went on a cleanup and forgot to use the app.

What if my app isn't loading?

If your app isn't loading, close the app and reopen it. If it still won't load, then you may not have service. If this is the case, don't worry! You can still submit cleanups. These images will be uploaded to our servers when you have service again. Some network features, such as the Trash Talk and profile pictures, may not work properly when you don't have service.

Do I have to pick up a lot of trash?

Nope! The more the merrier, but every little bit helps. Even if it's just picking up one piece of trash you see while you're on a walk, that's awesome.

How do I pick up the litter?

You can pick up the trash with your hands (at your own risk), wear gloves, use a reacher device, or use the inside of your trash bag to pick up the litter. Then, place the trash in your trash bag (preferably reusable). Continue to collect as much trash in your bag as your heart desires! Remember to wash/sanitize your hands afterwards.

How do I know if my cleanup was approved?

To view your cleanup history, click "View History" on the Profile page. Our machine learning algorithm (named Oscar) will automatically approve or deny your cleanup. If your cleanup is approved, the cleanup will be green in your history and your total trash count will automatically update. If you ever have questions or feel that Oscar made a mistake, please email help@cleanplanetproject.org so we can sort it out!

How do you generate volunteer reports?

The Litter CleanUp app automatically tracks the time you spend picking up litter. Please note that individual pictures of each piece of trash must be taken so that we can verify the number of hours you spent on the app (at least 1 piece every 5 minutes, on average). If you do not actively use the app, then we cannot give you volunteer hours. If you take a long break in the middle of your cleanup, we will only count the hours you spent actively picking up litter, but it's okay to submit multiple cleanups! To request an official Volunteer Hours Report, simply fill out the request form on our Volunteer page. Please allow 2-5 business days for us to generate the report. Thank you!
